Screen and hinge repair

Cracked panels, dim backlights, dead pixels and loose hinges are among the most common MacBook repairs. Here is how the network handles them.

The display is the most exposed part of any laptop, so it is no surprise that screen work fills a large share of the bench. A cracked panel is obvious. A dimming backlight, a flickering image, a bright spot under pressure, or a lid that no longer holds its angle can each point to a different repair, and the right fix depends on the exact model and generation.

Common symptoms

Cracked glass from a drop or a closed lid with an object left on the keyboard. A vertical or horizontal line of dead pixels after a knock. A backlight that fails so the screen is dark but the machine still runs. Image distortion that changes when the display is flexed, which often points to a damaged flex cable rather than the panel. A hinge that has stiffened, cracked its housing, or left the lid wobbling when typing.

How the bench works

The first step is to separate the panel from the cable and the hinge assembly. A technician checks the image on an external display to confirm the computer itself is fine, then inspects the internal display connector and flex path. Only then is a panel replacement recommended. If the flex or the hinge is the real fault, replacing the panel alone would waste money and solve nothing.

Options and trade-offs

Panel replacement

The full internal display unit is replaced with one matched to the model and finish.

Glass or overlay work

Where the panel behind the glass is sound, some benches replace the outer layer instead of the whole unit.

Hinge and housing

Stiff or cracked hinges are replaced with the surrounding bracket where the design calls for it.

Function test

Brightness, colour, lid angle, camera and alignment are all checked before return.

Typical estimate ranges

Screen work is priced by model and generation because panel sizes, finishes and connector layouts differ. Older machines often cost less to repair than recent ones, and stock matters: a common panel is usually cheaper and faster than one that has to be sourced to order. The pricing page explains what moves a quote, and a coordinator gives you a range when your job is matched.

Turnaround and warranty

When a panel is in stock, this class of repair is one of the quickest the network offers. Your estimate reflects the part, labour and testing, and the parts and work carry a warranty explained on the warranty page. If anything fails inside that window, the case record makes a follow-up straightforward.

Send your model and a description of the screen fault through the contact page and a coordinator will place the job with a display bench.

Preventing repeat damage

Most screen failures come from pressure or impact. Closing the lid on a pen, a cable or a small object is one of the most common causes, and the fracture often appears later rather than at the moment of contact. A padded sleeve and a habit of checking the deck before closing the lid both help. So does opening the lid from the centre rather than one corner, which spreads the load across the hinge.

If a hinge has stiffened, do not force it. Pressure at the hinge can fracture the surrounding housing or distort the panel, turning a small repair into a larger one.
